Miscellaneous Definitions
Why is it that most definitions in Computer Science end up being for abbreviations?
ARPA: Advanced Research Projects Agency. Originally set up in 1957 to help America keep technological and scientific military edge over the Soviet Union. It would eventually create ARPANET, which was the linking together of computers that became the Internet. Disbanded in 1990.
IEEE: The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc can be found at: http://www.ieee.org/ They maintain a lot of information about the internet, as well as submitting new proposals and suggestions. If you're interested in technical knowledge, they are well worth a visit.
LAN: Local Area Network. A network in one location, such as an office building.
WAN: Wide Area Network. Networks connected together to form a bigger one. Usually spread over large distances (hence the name).
