Cape Tribulation is named because that's where Captain Cook first ran into troubles. He'd been following the coast up, and the reef moves closer and closer to land, you can see some here in low tide. After scraping over reef, he decided to head to deeper waters (at night, which seems maybe not the greatest idea) but ran aground and seriously damaged his ship. Cape Tribulation was so named because, "here begun all our troubles."
